How to Apply the Innovation Process to Change an Organization

Some people like to ask, how to apply the innovation process to change an organization. 

Actually, the process of innovation is fairly complex and it can be quite difficult to apply the innovation process to change an organization. In its simplest form, the innovation process consists of three distinct phases: conception, implementation and marketing. The conception phase includes things like requirements analysis, idea generation and product planning: the implementation phase includes prototype development and testing and the marketing phase includes actual production and lunch.



ONE
Determine an unmet need where an innovation may help change your organization for the better. Consider intangible things like your culture and employee morale and more tangible items like your website or connecting better with a particular customer segment.

TWO
Write down a thorough analysis of your idea and how it addresses the unmet need. Structure your analysis like a business plan and include an executive summary, objective and implementation plan. This coincides with the conception phase of the innovation process.

THREE
Approach a member of your team who has clout with higher-ranking members of your organization. If you have direct access to your management or executive teams, find someone who you trust to help support your idea. There is always power in numbers.

FOUR
Test your idea by asking the person who will be helping drive your idea forward to review your analysis and provide candid feedback. Do not take it personally if this person has issues with your ideas, because he may bring up common objection that you may hear when you present your idea to your superiors. This is similar to the implementation phase of the innovation process.

FIVE
Edit your idea based on feedback from your colleague. Take all feedback into consideration and think about how you might handle possible objection in the later stages.

SIX
Set up a meeting your management or executive teams to discuss the idea. Present a thorough explanation of your idea and explain why this change will benefit the organization. Cite specific research and statistics that back up your claims. Explain the objective (increased profits or savings) and subjective (increase employee morale) benefits and why they outweigh the risk. Present your detailed implementation and roll-out plan and ask for specific and timely next-step actions from yours superiors.

SEVEN
After your meeting, ask for feedback from your management and executive teams. Let them know that you would like to drive the idea forward by helping in whatever way you can. Often, executives can be busy and resistant to change and things may fall thorough the cracks, but if you remain persistent and continue to follow up and communicate the reasons why your innovative idea may benefit the organization, you will have a much better chance of changing your organization.
